Well, here we are again at the cusp of another New Year. For me and the ones I love - not the least of which are my 'Scopers - I hope that 2010 will be at
least as good a year as the last.
My original intent was to come here with a bit of a 2009 epilogue and a 2010 foreword, but everything in my head seems to dissolve into mawkish prattle before I can write it. So, suffice it to say the following:
I'm so fortunate in many ways... so many, in fact, that I feel a bit guilty about not counting my good fortunes every single day. It doesn't mean that I don't appreciate them. It merely means that I'm subject to distraction and laziness like everyone else. But the two most prominent good fortunes in my life - my Tracy and my 'Scopers - are ones that I'm always gratefully conscious of on some level. Among Tracy's many gifts to me are her patience in allowing me to devote so much time to doing what is right, needed, and what matters, and her understanding that HopeScope is alive and about people... not merely so much transferred data.
This past year has been yet another one of growth. There is not one single 'Scoper who has not grown on some level, nor is there a single 'Scoper who has not contributed, in some way or other, to the growth of their peers or charges. That fact is due, in large part, to 'Scopers' collective belief in - and affection for - one another. The quality of the environment here is unmatched, I daresay, and this is due to the efforts of the adults and young people here who understand that HopeScope is bigger than the sum of its parts; it's who we all become, anew, every day, because of each other.
Once again, at this pensive time of year, I am deeply indebted to each and every 'Scoper - young and older - for everything you do to make sure that HopeScope is love in practice. Thanks to each of you, giving me the gift of allowing me into your lives, HopeScope - small though it is - has already exceeded my fondest dreams of what it might someday be.
Happy New Year and much love to all!
