Mel, good topic!
I had actually not been aware of the Lemony Snicket piece until you mentioned it, but I can honestly say that it's pretty damned close to pure genius.
It beats the hell out of MSNBC's analysis, for sure, and it may well be my favorite piece on the Occupy topic as well.
Now, I'm one of your countrymen, and I know you're interested largely in points of view from our family members outside the States, but I'm inclined to share your view, from what you have implied thus far. Though I share most of the sentiments of the Occupants/Occupiers, I tend to view most demonstrations as largely fruitless because it seems to me that demonstrators - rightly or wrongly - end up addressing symptoms rather than causative factors. It doesn't seem to me that complex, systemic social issues, such as economic or other inequity, can be examined at the cellular level by mere public presence. Loud does not necessarily equate to potent. Personally, I like Snicket's Item 10 as a good start to a possible solution.
I'm interested to see other views!
