TCat, I know what you're going through. A few years back I started to learn 'Ragamuffin' by Michael Hedges and the right-hand technique is completely different to the picking technique I was used to. The tempo of the piece is 108 BPM and for about a week I was going through every single bar at less than 30 BPM because I had to think each movement of every single finger. I can't say that I have truely mastered that piece but now I can play it up tempo and I could perfect it if I spent some time practicing. That wasn't my goal though, I only wanted to understand this technique.
Everytime we approach something new it seems to put us back to the very beginning but it enlarges our musical horizon and helps us to approach the next challenge with more confidence. But you have to appriciate the struggles as well because they will never stop, no matter what level you're playing at.
